Sunburn

Sunburn is a radiation burn that affects the skin tissue due to overexposure to UV rays from the sun. It causes redness of the skin as well as irritation.

The sun emits three wavelengths of ultraviolet rays. These are:

UVA

UVB

UVC

UVA and UVB have the potential to penetrate the skin, while UVC does not even reach the Earth’s surface. Thus, sunburn and skin damage is caused by UVA and UVB. It must be noted that while sunburn is visible skin damage can be much worse and can alter DNA, prematurely aging the skin.

HOW TO PREVENT SUNBURN

Sunburn can be painful and embarrassing. Follow these tips to avoid sunburn and reduce sun damage and keep your skin safe:

Watch the clock : The sun’s rays are the most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM. Try avoid being outdoors during the time or stick to the shady areas as much as possible.

Wearing the right clothes : Broad-brimmed hats, long-sleeves, pants and UV-blocking sunglasses can protect you from the sun to a large extent.

Sunscreen : It is important to cover exposed areas of the skin with a minimum of 1 ounce of broad- spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. A broad-spectrum sunscreen offers protection against UVA and UVB.

SIGNS OF SUNBURN

Those suffering from sunburn will notice a redness of the skin as well as pain or irritation. In extreme cases, sunburn can also cause blisters and swelling. This may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms including a fever, chills and headache. In a few days, the sunburn-affected skin will begin to peel off and cause itching as the body tries to rid itself of the damaged cells.
